Palazzo d'Automne

A palace surged from the layers, revealed by the scraper. Baroque golden volutes emerge from a ground where Mediterranean turquoise dialogues with coppered red. A fragment of fresco peeled from a Venetian wall, carried by time all the way to us.

Palazzo d'Automne is a palimpsest in the most literal sense. This painting was first made in 2022 under the title À la faveur de l'automne, entirely in rust and gold leaf. Then it became blue. Then something else again. Three or four versions succeeded one another, each one covering the previous. Today, the scraper has brought back to the surface what remained of all those lives. The reds of the original autumn, the intermediate turquoises, the gold everywhere: all coexist on the final surface.

The title itself is a palimpsest. It keeps in memory the name of the first version, as the canvas keeps its buried layers.
